Born and raised in Huntington Beach, "GYRO", has made his mark as one of Orange Counties favorite drummers. It all started at the tender age of 5 when Gyros first drum set took its beating. Raised by his mother whose background is in music, dance and theatre, Gyro had no way out of becoming the entertainer he is today. At the age of 10 Gyro received the biggest thrill of his life when his mother took him to see the greatest rock band ever, KISS, in concert, live at the Forum in LA. Shortly there after Moms garage became the music hall of choice when Gyro and friends decided to put on there own air guitar concert. Dressed to kill as Gene Simmons from KISS, Gyro was spitting fake blood and pretending to blow fire with a home made torch and a can of WD-40. And he still has the pictures to prove it! Needless to say that was when gyro formed his first real band as a freshman in High school a whole new world opened up around him. He found real musicians and chicks that dug them! As a Clash tribute band playing mostly the high school party seen and a few small clubs Gyro admits his fondest moments of that band were playing on the back patio at the lead guitarists beach house in Sunset Beach. "We were rock stars in training." Says Gyro. "We had girls all over the beach coming up and watching us play. It was like a damn free-for-all!" Throughout the years Gyro has had the opportunity to rock Southern Ca. with the best of them. Performing and playing in a variety of different bands all over LA and Orange County, which include just about every musical style out there, punk, country, rock, blues, you name it he played it. Prior to starting the band Southern Crush Gyro decided to take a few years off from the music scene to help raise his two sons (both musicians) with his wife Rhonda (the lead singer in Southern Crush). What kicked him back in gear was watching his sixteen year old son play the Whisky A Go-Go in Hollywood, which was the last stage Gyro performed on six years earlier. Although percussion is still Gyros first love, he has an incredible ability to pick up just about any instrument there is and play the hell out of it. Also his crazy antics on stage can be a bit intimidating for the prim and proper. Look out! If hes wearing more than just a G-string and a pair of cowboy boots behind his kit, or throwing a drumstick at your head, you might be able to make it through the show without crying from laughter. When
I asked Gyro at the end of our interview, "Who were some of your
influences growing up?" there was a pause
and then he states;
"Well
showmanship wise, Tommy Lee. That fucker is crazy!
But, talent, Buddy Rich, Neil Pert, Terry Bozzio, Carter Beuford they
are still my favorites. Every time I watch them play, I know I will
learn something new, something to help me become a better musician
and hopefully a better teacher to my kids."
